Dressing for a Med School Interview: Your Ultimate Style Guide

Dressing for a Med School Interview is a guest post by a good friend of mine, Alexis Gaulden. She is the CEO of LXS Fashion and your style guru for the big day!

After filling out a gazillion applications you have finally received that phone call back to get ready for a med school interview. First things first, you need to figure out what to wear so you can “dress to impress.”

When preparing for a med school interview you will want to research all you can about the school. Since we are talking about attire get a feel for how the admissions office dresses by looking at the pictures posted on the school’s website. The first impression you make will be based on what you are wearing. You want to look clean and sharp no matter the school you are interviewing for.

Now, let me get you prepared to pass the eye test so you can secure that bag and seat in the class!

Okay, ladies, business formal is typically the style you want when dressing for a med school interview. Now, as hard as you have worked to get your body to where you want it to be, an interview is not the time or the place to show that off. Keep it classy and covered up. You want their eyes on the prize (you) and not on ya thighs lol. I’m just being real with you.

Suits, blouses, button-downs, and dresses are all acceptable interview attire. Neutral colors such as navy, beige, grey, black, and white are what you should stick to.

Outfits:

  • Pants suit + Blouse
  • Blouse + Skirt
  • White button-down + Slacks
  • Dress + Blazer
  • Black Dress + Tights
  • Layer Sweater + Buton-down +Slacks

These are just a few outfit ideas, so feel free to change or mix and match outfits. These are the core pieces of clothing you will want to stick with. Pick clothing that fits your body type the best. Meaning, your clothes should not be hugging your body nor be loose-fitting over it.

Whichever pieces you decide to go with be comfortable enough to sit, stand, and strut (walk) in. That brings me to mention what not to wear: shoes you know you can’t walk in lol. Stick to flats, loafers, or kitten heels. Leave the stilettoes at home for now.

We want you to look pretty, classy, and confident in your appearance. That way, all you have to focus on is killing the interview instead of being worried about if you have on the right outfit on or if you look good enough. If you are reading this article, then you will not have those problems. I got you!

Now, for the guys, you are a lot less complex when it comes to dressing for a med school interview. It’s a lot easier to dress you than it is for us high maintenance women. Business formal is also the correct attire necessary to dress for an interview. You need to make sure you are not walking around with too tight or too baggy clothes.

Suits, button-downs, slacks, or sweaters are what you should wear. Neutral colors are important to keep in mind when dressing for an interview as I mentioned the same for the ladies.

Outfits:

  • Suit + Button-down
  • Button-down + Slacks + Tie
  • Layer Sweater + White Button-down + Slacks

Now, once again, play around with these different pieces of clothing to fit your needs of putting together a sharp outfit. Make sure your closest is stacked with a few collar shirts, slacks, and suits for future references. Try to go beyond just having a regular black suit and substitute for a navy or grey suit jacket. It is also a good idea to implement textures to give your outfit some extra spice as the options for your attire are more limited. Adding textures often comes off as classier and more sophisticated.

Sorry to break it to you but sneakers are what not to wear with your interview attire. I know, I know that is the new look that men wear but that is not appropriate for your first impression for an interview. Bring out those black or brown oxfords or boots, but not your Jordan 1s. You want to look like a businessman in the making ready to capture the money bag, okay.

# What Not to Wear

  • Refrain from crazy, flashy colors
  • Do not be too casual
  • Keep the fragrances at a minimum
  • Ladies, do not overbeat (makeup) your face
  • Limit your accessories

After all, when dressing for a med school interview, your look is essential in being considered for admissions. I believe the significance of this topic is often overlooked. You want to present yourself as the full package and sell yourself in every aspect possible. If you look good you will feel good and gain confidence at whatever it is you do in life. Dress appropriately for the weather, ensure you are wrinkle-free, and check for stains or holes in your clothing.

Smile, be sharp, be confident in your skills and abilities that you are wonderfully and beautifully made to conquer this interview. Good luck!
